Jancis Robinson, Master of Wine:
Shows the intense fragrance and high concentration so typical of the 2018 vintage. Supple fruit overlaid with crisp tannins and ripe, appetizing acidity. Lots of fullness and grip.

Since the Massolino brothers have decided not to produce Barolo wines from their Vigna Rionda, Magheria, Parafada and Parussi vineyards from the 2018 vintage, they have instead only made a Barolo from the best grapes from these vineyards. The Barolo DOCG Classico is very important for the Massolino winery. This traditional wine should be a Barolo of the highest standard in every vintage .
After the hand-picked harvest in October, the mash fermentation takes place in oak barrels ("tini") at temperatures around 30°C. The wine is then aged in large Slovenian oak barrels for up to 30 months before further aging in the bottle. This bottle aging finally takes place in special dark and cool cellars. Only then does the Barolo go on sale.
This Barolo impresses with its intense range of fragrances and freshness. Bright, fruity notes of elderberry, cherry and rosehip dominate the spectrum. On the palate you can immediately feel the supple tannin, which is supported by ripe strawberries and wild berries. The wine has great tension, lots of power and great elegance. A truly noble Barolo that does not have to hide behind the layers of Barolo wines!
This Barolo is at its best when served with red meats, especially game, steak and dishes with truffles. It also goes well with meat sauce, risotto and medium-ripened cow's and goat's milk cheeses.
