Montefico is a relatively small, eight hectare vineyard located on the eastern side of the Barbaresco growing area. There are only four wineries that have plots on this renowned cru and La Ca Növa is one of those wineries. At the end of the 19th century, the family acquired almost 2 hectares of vineyards on the southern part of Montefico , called Vigna Bric Mentina. According to legend, the Montefico vineyard once belonged to Domizio Cavazza, the founder of Barbaresco. This Montefico Cru stands for powerful Barbaresco wines that also display finesse and remarkable elegance.
The grapes are hand-picked in October and after destemming and pressing, fermentation follows without temperature control in stainless steel tanks and in open wooden vats. This process usually takes up to 30 days. The maturation then takes place over a two-year period in large Austrian oak barrels, as is traditional. A six-month bottle storage then completes the maturation process.
This 2020 Barbaresco from Cru Montefico has an excellent texture and lots of power and energy. On the nose, the wine has diverse notes of cherries, mint, rose petals, but also spicy and earthy aromas. On the palate it shows density, structure, intensity and a lively freshness . The tannins are round and well proportioned. The hearty and persistent finish rounds off the drinking pleasure wonderfully. This wine is ready to drink immediately and will fulfill its enormous potential over the next 15+ years.
