The Nebbiolo grapes for the Josetta Saffirio Barolo Riserva Millenovecento48 2014 come from a vineyard in Castelletto, a sub-area of the municipality of Monforte D'Alba.
What is special about this vineyard is that the vines were planted in 1948 and are still producing berries of the highest quality. This motivated Sara Vezza to produce a Barolo Riserva from these grapes, which she has been producing in good vintages since 2007.
The hand picking of the grapes usually takes place in October and the carefully selected berries are lightly pressed and destemmed. Fermentation then takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 30°/ 32°. Then the expansion begins, which initially begins for the wine in barriques. After 24 months, the Barolo is then aged in a cement tank for another 24 months. Finally, in the last phase of maturation, the wine is stored in the bottle for a year. Only then does it go on sale.
This Barolo Riserva has complex aromas. Intense notes of vanilla, roasted hazelnuts, liquorice, tobacco and cinnamon. But also fruity and berry scents with aromas of wild strawberries and blackberries. On the palate it is full-bodied, elegant, full-bodied and tart with finely woven tannins. An excellent Barolo not to be missed.
As an accompaniment to food, it goes very well with roasts, red meat and mature cheeses. The Barolo Riserva has now reached a very good drinking maturity after seven years. However, it can show and develop its great potential by 2028-2030.
