Wine Plus:
Quite a firm nose, tobacco, some iodine and dried flowers, red and black berries, a hint of leather and juniper. Ripe, juicy, densely woven fruit, some roasted and cocoa-spicy oak, smoky notes, present but ripe and quite fine tannins, persistent, has power, certain depth, a little pepper, also cranberries, still potential for development, good depth, very good, juicy and spicy finish.
Drinking recommendation: Mid-2022 to 2032+. 92 WP-excellent
The Nebbiolo grapes for the Gianfranco Alessandria Barolo San Giovanni 2018 DOCG red wine come from the Cru San Giovanni. This prime location, located in the municipality of Monforte D'Alba, is planted with very old Nebbiolo vines that produce grapes of very high quality.
When harvesting by hand in October, care is taken to select only the best berries for processing. These are then fermented in the cantina in a temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation tank. The subsequent malolactic fermentation also takes place in a stainless steel tank. Finally, the wine is aged in barriques. Both in new barriques and in used barrels. This process takes at least 24 months and at the end of the maturation the Barolo is stored in the bottle for 4-6 months.
Floral, berry and balsamic notes dominate the nose. On the palate, the density and structure of the wine impresses, the ripe and delicate tannins, the power and good depth and the spicy and persistent finish. A top Barolo with good expansion potential. It goes very well with game, red meat, risotto with mushrooms and aged cheeses. Drinking window: 2022-2036
