Roberto Ferraris 2018 Grixia Monferrato Rosso DOC is a fantastic Nebbiolo from Monferrato with rich aromas, fine tannins and lots of elegance and warmth.
The Nebbiolo grape variety comes from northern Piedmont and can be found in many regions of the province. The best known are the Langhe and Roero growing areas. Interestingly, up until the end of the 12th century, the Nebbiolo grape variety was most widespread in the Asti region and was mentioned in documents as the Grixia (Grey) grape variety.
Following tradition, Roberto Ferraris, whose winery is located in Agliano Terme in the Asti regiont, also uses the name Grixia for its high-quality Nebbiolo wine. The soil conditions for the Nebbiolo vine are optimal here and comparable to the conditions in the neighboring Langhe region.
The Ferraris family's Nebbiolo vineyard faces south-west at 260 meters above sea level. The grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September/beginning of October each year, then destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The expansion takes place in 500 liter oak barrels (tonneau) and lasts 15-18 months. After a short period of bottle storage, the Nebbiolo is finally available for sale.
This high-quality Nebbiolo has classic fruity and berry aromas, a lot of substance and density, is velvety, elegant with fine-grained tannins and a long finish. All very good and straight forward. This wine is ready to drink immediately and for the next eight to ten years.
A good accompaniment to risotto, white meat, lamb and aged cheeses.
THE PRODUCER: ROBERTO FERRARIS
The Roberto Ferraris winery is located on the outskirts of the Monferrato village of Agliano Terme. This area is considered one of the best growing areas for the Barbera grape in all of Italy. The microclimate and the soil produce grapes that give rise to an excellent Barbera wine.
Roberto Ferraris took over the winery from his father. Some of the vines that Roberto and his family tend are seventy years old. He is a very humble man who is internationally known as one of the best Barbera producers.
The winery produces about seventy thousand bottles of wine per year - mainly Barbera wines, ranging from fine table wine to noble Nice, which rivals the best Italian wines.
He also produces this wonderful Nebbiolo, which by law must be called "Monferrato Rosso". Make no mistake - it's an excellent Nebbiolo, comparable to some of the best Nebbiolo wines from the Langhe.
