A fantastic Nebbiolo from Monferrato with rich aromas, fine tannins and a lot of elegance and warmth.
The Nebbiolo grape variety comes from northern Piedmont and can be found in many regions of the province. The best known are the Langhe and Roero growing areas. Interestingly, the Nebbiolo grape was the most widespread in the Asti region until the end of the 12th century and was mentioned in documents as the Grixia (gray) grape.
Following tradition, Roberto Ferraris, whose winery is in Agliano Terme in the Asti region t, also uses the name Grixia for his high-quality Nebbiolo wine. The soil conditions for the Nebbiolo vine are optimal here and comparable to the conditions in the neighboring Langhe region.
The Ferraris family's Nebbiolo vineyard is facing southwest at 260 meters above sea level. The grapes are picked by hand at the end of September / beginning of October each year, then the berries are removed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The expansion takes place in 500 liter oak barrels (tonneau) and takes 15-18 months. After a short bottle storage, the Nebbiolo finally goes on sale.
This high-quality Nebbiolo shows classic fruity and berry aromas with a little air; has a lot of substance and density, is velvety, elegant with fine-grained tannins and a long finish. Everything is very good and straightforward. This wine is ready to drink immediately and for the next eight to ten years.
A good accompaniment to risotto, white meat, lamb and aged cheese.
THE PRODUCER: ROBERTO FERRARIS
The Roberto Ferraris winery was founded in 1923 by Stefano Ferraris and is located in Agliano Terme in the heart of the historic Barbera d'Asti area. Due to the nature of the soil and the microclimate, the conditions here are excellent for the Barbera vine.
For this reason Roberto Ferrari's father planted his 10 hectare vineyards with Barbera vines, some of which have now reached an average age of 70 years. One can rightly call Roberto a Barbera expert and first class specialist. He runs the winery in the same tradition as his ancestors did. With his Barbera wines he has earned an international reputation for their consistently high quality.
Today the winery produces around 70,000 bottles of wine annually. Roberto presses five different quality wines from the Barbera grapes. Also worth mentioning is the winery's historic wine cellar, which dates back to the early 19th century. Today it serves as a museum and is equipped with a collection of natural sculptures from old vines, all of which Roberto's brother created.
