Master of Wine J.Robinson: "Simply delicious! One of the best buys of this vintage"
Massolino Barolo Commune Serralunga d'Alba 2017 DOCG has been the flagship of the winery for many years and the delicious 2017 vintage fits seamlessly into the ranks of the many excellent Barolo wines of the Massolino family.
The Nebbiolo grapes for the Massolino Barolo Commune Serralunga d'Alba 2017 DOCG come from different vineyards in Serralunga D'Alba and Castiglione Falletto, which is why the aroma spectrum of the wines is very diverse.
Hand picking takes place in the second half of October. After the berries have been destemmed, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then matured in large oak barrels and this process takes at least 30 months. The subsequent aging in the bottle, which is usually one year, takes place in dark and cool storage rooms provided for this purpose.
This impressive Massolino Barolo Commune Serralunga d'Alba 2017 DOCG has a wide range of fragrances, consisting of red berries, exotic plums, but also concentrated cherries, dark spice and mineral, stony notes. The density and concentration of the sour cherry fruit, which is accompanied by long, finely woven tannins, is impressive on the palate. A really fine, powerful Barolo paired with great elegance and balance.
The Barolo goes very well with red meat, game and egg pasta with meat sauce. It is already very drinkable and will reach its full potential over the next 8-10 years.
Massolino helped shape the history of Barolos from the beginning. Today the winery is one of the most important producers in the Langhe.
The Massolino winery is inextricably linked to the village of Serralunga d'Alba and is one of the most renowned wineries in the Langhe. Beautifully located on the edge of the village square, you can see the steep vineyards and the entire panorama of the Alps
The winery was founded in 1896 by Giovanni Massolino. He was responsible for connecting the village to the electricity grid. His perseverance and creativity were the basis for today's traditional and excellent winery.
Today, the fourth generation, Franco Massolino makes wines with passion and the aim of preserving the unique characteristics of the grape varieties grown and with the conviction that there is a deep and palpable bond between the vines, the hills and gives to the wine producer. The Massolino family has followed this philosophy since 1896 - and does not shut itself off from the necessary innovations as long as tradition is preserved. In short - always loyal to yourself.
