The Cru Cannubi is probably one of the most complex and fascinating areas of the entire Barolo growing area. The uniqueness of this vineyard lies in the unique combination of the two main locations of the Barolo area (Elveziano and Tortoniano), which mainly consist of fine sand and limestone, which in connection with the microclimatic conditions and the location gives the wine fullness, elegance, delicacy and longevity.
Only the best grapes from one of the 3 Cannubi vineyards owned by the family are selected for the Cannubi Riserva. The hand-picking takes place during the month of October. After destemming, the mash is fermented in open wooden vats for about 30-40 days. The malolactic fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks. The Barolo is matured in medium-sized Slovenian oak barrels over a period of 52 months. Only after six months in bottle storage does the wine finally go on sale.
This high-quality Barolo Riserva has aromas of red and black berries underlaid with slightly tobacco and peppery notes. On the palate, this wine appears dense, elegant and well structured. The youthful tannin is accessible and fine-grained. The finish is persistent, firm and earthy. This Barolo is already showing its class and promises to keep its quality for the next decade. Good accompaniment to roasts, game, red meat and aged cheese.
THE PRODUCER: SERIO & BATTISTA BORGOGNO
The Serio & Battista Borgogno winery has been on the upper part of the Cannubi vineyard, one of the absolute top locations in the entire Barolo wine-growing region, since 1897.
But the family history began in the middle of the 19th century with Cavalier Francesco Borgogno. He produced his own wine, which he then sold in his wife's inn in Barolo. From his son Ludovico, his sons, Serio and Battista, inherited some land and a small farmhouse in Cannubi. With wise foresight, they managed to make your dream of your own winery a reality. Over the years they bought more plots from the Cannubi vineyard and eventually owned 3.5 hectares of this valuable land.
All their lives, Serio and Battista have worked tirelessly to fully exploit the enormous potential of the winery. They have thus created the basis for the next generations. Today the Cannubi Cru is one of the best locations in the entire Barolo area.
The memory of Serio Borgogno, who died in 2016, lives on in the vines and in the passion that he gave his family in the cradle. Today the winery is run by his granddaughters, Emanuela and Federica. You are already the 5th generation of this iconic winery. The family produces around 60,000 bottles of wine annually. In addition to Barolo, there are also Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo wines.
