This Langhe Pino Nero Pinay 2016 by Attilio Ghisolfi is a 100% Pinot Noir and represents a small experiment for the Piedmontese winery in vinifying grapes that are not indigenous to the Langhe area. A well-considered experiment that can be considered extremely successful.
The grapes come from Pinot Noir plots owned by the winery for two decades in Monforte d'Alba, in the Visette area, and used mainly for the production of high quality sparkling wines.
The grapes are hand-picked in early autumn. The mash fermentation that follows is triggered by the spontaneous fermentation of native yeasts and lasts about 9 days. The aging phase of the wine then consists of two phases. The larger part is bottled in small oak barrels for about six months, the remaining part comes in stainless steel tanks.
The result is a Langhe Piont Noir Pinay wine that shows rich and finely fruity aromas with clear hints of cherries and sweet spices on the nose . On the palate it is warm, concentrated and with pleasant fruity notes reminiscent of small red fruits. The tannins are fine, with a warm finish. A balanced and elegant wine to drink now, but still with significant aging potential. Goes well with vegetarian dishes or main courses with white meat.
