This Barbera wine comes from the Colli Tortonese growing region, which is located in the south-eastern tip of Piedmont with the town of Tortona as its centre. Compared to the more well-known Barbera D'Asti and Barbera D'Alba, the Barbera Tortonese often has more distinctive characteristics: for example, a higher alcohol and acid content and a more massive structure. When matured in wooden barrels, very high-quality Barbera wines can be produced, which impress with their full-bodiedness, concentration and great potential for aging.
The vineyard from which the grapes for the Montagnola Barbera Colli Tortonese come consists of vines that are sixty years old. Due to the age of the vines, the growth of the vines is lower, which contributes to a higher concentration in the berries and thus to a high quality. The manual harvest takes place in September and after pressing and destemming, the mash fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures for 15 months in used barriques, where malolactic fermentation also takes place. After another 12 months of storage in the bottle, the wine is sold.
On the nose, the Barbera shows notes of plums and violets against a background of tobacco and liquorice. The taste is full-bodied, dense and well-structured with subtle acidity that beautifully balances the high alcohol content. A Babrera of great elegance and complexity.
Readiness to drink: immediately and for the next eight years. We suggest roasts, red meats, grilled and aged cheeses as food pairings.
